CONVENTION CALL 2021

From the President

Greetings Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you and your family are doing well. The last 16 months have been incredibly challenging. Many of our members have faced health, financial, and social challenges. We are ONE family, and we need to continue to love, support, and encourage each other.

I cannot express how excited the ASB Alumni Board is to announce that our 2021 Annual Convention will be held in person and over Zoom. We would like to extend a heartfelt and warm thank you to the AIDB Administration and the A.S.B. Administration and Staff for helping to make this happen for the Alumni and Workers Association of the Alabama School for the Blind members. Alumni Board members have received so many calls from members that are excited and looking forward to this years’ Convention.

The Alumni and Workers Association of the Alabama School for the Blind invites you to the annual convention being held from July 23rd through July 25th 2021 at the Alabama School for the Blind.

The theme for this year’s convention is “Sentimental Journey”. We are excited about this convention, and we believe you will have a great time. It will be so good to fellowship with each other and to be a part of some incredibly special events that we have planned.

There will be gift cards given out randomly throughout the weekend at different activities. You will have to be present if your name is drawn to win. The larger gift cards will be given out randomly throughout the business meeting, and again you will have to be present win. Your Alumni Board is, again, hosting an initiative to offer stipends for people who have not attended Alumni in the last five years or more. Stipends include meals and events for the chosen candidate. This year we are adding caregiver stipends so that any members who need support can have it without cost to the caregiver. The caregiver cannot be a member of Alumni and they must accompany their alumni member at all times on campus. Caregivers are subject to the same rules as all convention attendees. Members who want to submit the names for any stipend should provide contact information of the candidates to Michael Talley at (205) 420-8112 or by sending an email to: talleyscafe@yahoo.com. Up to 10 stipends will be awarded. The Alumni Board will select candidates for stipends. The deadline to submit candidates is Friday, July 9, 2021.

Convention Transportation

Local transportation (within the city limits) will be provided to those who are registered for the convention. The buses are intended for traveling to and from convention functions. On campus housing is available for all members. The dorms will open on Friday, July 23, 2021 at 12:00 P.M.. Monroe Hall and Orr Hall will be used for married couples, while Williams Hall will host men and Ward Hall will host women. There will be limited space in Monroe Hall and Orr Hall. Room assignments for housing will be made on a first-come-first-served basis. Please remember that our campus is your home away from home and the facilities should be treated with respect.

Be sure to check your room when checking in and report to the houseparent on duty any problems that need correcting. When you leave on Sunday be sure that your room is clean and in order. If any rooms are left in disorder or are damaged, the occupants will be subject to a fee of $300 and, at the discretion of the Board of Trustees, a reprimand or dismissal from participating in Alumni activities.

Pool Hours

Campus security will be available throughout the convention weekend. You may even see a Talladega County Deputy Sheriff on campus, which patrol AIDB campuses. We are glad to have them patrolling. If you require the services of a Deputy Sheriff, please contact 256-761-3266.

If you notice Alumni members on campus without an armband, please direct them to registration. If you notice anyone that you do not know, please notify security or one of the Alumni officers.

Liability

Although the Alumni Association provides security, we do not assume liability for personal belongings. It is the responsibility of each member and guest to secure his or her own personal possessions.

Snack Bar

This year we welcome ASB Athletics. They will operate the snack bar this year as a way to raise funds for their programs. Please support them and make purchases throughout the weekend. Also go by say hi and introduce yourself! They will be open throughout the weekend serving hot and cold food.

Activities

Saturday we will have a “Blues and BBQ” lunch. We have once again invited Sylacauga Sno Biz to be onsite so we can purchase a nice cool treat on what I’m sure will be a hot summer day. So be sure to bring plenty of extra money so you can purchase a cool Sno Biz. They are only $4.00 each for a 16oz cup! Please join us for food, fellowship and music after the business meeting.

Talent Show

Brenda Uptain will coordinate the Alumni Talent Showcase. If you would like to sign up, please email Brenda Uptain at Uptain.brenda@aidb.org or call her after July 16, 2021 at 256-761-0114. Please leave a message with your name, the name of your act, and if you will need sound help. CD’s must be submitted by June 1st with clear instructions on which track to play. Single track CD’s are preferred. Acts should be no longer than 5 minutes. Participants may only perform one solo act. There will be no cash awards at the talent showcase. The showcase will be for fun.

ASB Music Hall of Hall

Music is such a special part of the Alabama School for the Blind. This year, we will not induct any new members, however, we are always searching for the right candidate. We anticipate that we will induct at least 2 or 3 new members at the 2022 ASB Alumni Convention. If you have a candidate that you want to nominate, please contact Princeton Reeves in person or by email at: reevesprinceton8@gmail.com

Announcing the 2021 Alumni Convention!

Saturday, June 19, 2021

You are cordially invited to our 2021 ASB Alumni Convention. It will be held from July 23 – 25, 2021.

Dear A.S.B. Family and Friends,

I hope you and your family are doing well.  The last year has been very challenging for all of us. However, we still have so much to be thankful for. The proverb “all things come to those who wait” means if people are persistent and patient, they will finally achieve their goal. In other words, it means a person must exercise patience when working on something close to his/her heart, even to reach the goal he/she desires.

The ASB Alumni Board is proud to announce that we WILL have our 2021 Alumni convention!  We are so excited for the opportunity to meet and fellowship with our A.S.B. family and friends again!  We would like to extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to the AIDB Administration and Mr. Kribbs and A.S.B. staff for allowing us to hold our 2021 Alumni convention on the A.S.B. campus!

While we are excited to announce our 2021 Alumni convention, there are some important changes to be noted. Due to construction on the A.S.B. campus, we will not be able to hold our convention as we usually do on the first full weekend in June. Please mark your calendar and save the date for July 23-25, 2021.  Check in will begin around 12:00 P.M. on Friday, July 23, 2021.  However, this year more than ever, pre registration will be strongly encouraged and necessary. Safety has to be our number one priority and we will have a limit of 100 people allowed to stay in the dorms snd a total of 125 members on campus.

So, to be fair, the first 125 members that register will be allowed to be on campus. There will be a limit of 2 guests (including kids) per member. We hope the limit of people on campus will be lifted after this year. We know the limits may be frustrating, but we respectfully ask for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.

For anyone that may not feel comfortable attending in person, or be unable to attend, we will have our major events streamed over Zoom. This means our members can listen in by telephone, by computer, or by using the Zoom app.

More Information will be coming soon. Pre registration will open on or before June 7, 2021.  Please help us to share this exciting news with your family and friends. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or text me at (205) 420-8112.  Stay well, stay motivated, and stay connected!

Best Wishes,

Michael Talley
